Why Choose Classical Pilates?

NEW YORK – OCTOBER 1961: Joe Pilates, Inventor, physical fitness guru and founder of the Pilates exercise method instructs a client on the Cadillac and works her through an exercise routine in his 8th Avenue studio on October 4, 1961 in New York City, New York. (Photo by I.C. Rapoport/Getty Images)
Classical Pilates refers to the original method created and taught by Joseph Pilates. It follows the same sequence, principles, and exercises that Joe developed, using equipment designed according to his original specifications. This approach preserves the integrity of his system so students can experience Pilates as it was meant to be practiced — structured, purposeful, and transformative.
Today, there are many forms of Pilates, and each has its own style. Some newer approaches incorporate modified equipment, altered movement patterns, or entirely new exercises that were not part of Joe’s repertoire. While these contemporary variations can be beneficial, they differ from the classical method in both structure and intention.
Classical Pilates stays rooted in the original work. The movements flow in a specific order; the equipment is engineered to support the method; and the system is taught as a cohesive whole rather than a collection of stand-alone exercises. This consistency is what allows students to build strength, balance, and body awareness progressively and safely.
Heidi teaches the classical method with a modern understanding of alignment and biomechanics, honoring Joe’s system while helping each student apply it to their own body. It’s a timeless approach that remains effective because it has never needed to be reinvented.

Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the first Pilates Podcast!
Beyond the Movement is turning twenty, and it’s wild to remember just how ahead of its time it really was. When it launched on December 4th, 2005, Heidi Miller created the first Pilates podcast in the world—back when “podcast” was a word most people had never heard. The whole thing was built on pure enthusiasm and trial-and-error: figuring out how to record audio while sitting in a closet-turned-soundbooth, calling guests on this new thing called Skype, uploading MP3s by hand, and even coding the RSS feed from scratch because there simply wasn’t another way. And convincing guests to talk to Heidi through a computer? That might have been the biggest challenge of all!
Even so, over 42 episodes, the show delivered real Pilates conversations, stories, and history that connected people long before social media made it easy. Two decades later, it still holds a special place as a charming, scrappy, and truly groundbreaking piece of Pilates history.
